Last week, David Hererra learned quickly that he did not need the letters “M.D.” after his name to deliver a baby. When the couples' scheduled doctor mysteriously went missing in a West Hills, Texas hospital, Hererra had to take matter into his own hands—literally. Read Full Post

Could obesity be contagious? Sounds crazy, but a new study shows that there may be a connection between obesity and a type of common virus that causes colds, the flu and diarrhea: The American Academy of Pediatrics published an “early release” study on its website today that showed a link between childhood obesity and an antibody of a human adenovirus 36 or AD-36.

Of the total 124 children in the study, 54 percent were obese and 46 percent were not.  The findings show that 15 of the 19 children who had the antibody were obese, or 78 percent.  The researchers said on msnbc.com that this could help explain rapid or unexplained weight gain in kids but that he isn’t “blaming” obesity on the virus. Many kids head back to school today—if they haven’t already—so as a reward for getting them out the door, read Jenny Rosenstrach’s brilliantly funny letter to her husband (served by “attorneys” Almuerzo & Snaks) to ensure that he will be packing lunches and snacks exactly HALF of the time this school year.   Read Full Post

Kraft decided to tap their test kitchen and extensive recipe database to create an iPad app with cooking tutorials, nutrition articles, and, yes, a ton of recipes for American standbys. The $1.99 app is meant to be the ultimate kitchen tool for moms trying to serve up healthy food, and they’ve done a pretty good job of creating an intuitive, rich one-stop-shop for busy moms.

My favorite section of Big Fork, Little Fork is how-to videos, which feature a chef and a kid in the kitchen learning age-appropriate skills, like how to crack an egg. I’ve never seen a cooking show or videos geared to mom and kid together—and these are fun and fresh ones.

This past week was all about defiant and, admittedly, hilarious on-the-job rage, which I secretly snicker at in understanding. (See the Jet Blue flight attendant who lost it last Friday after an argument with a passenger, deploying the emergency slide on the runway and sliding off the job—after grabbing “at least one” beer, according to the AP article.) Did you happen to catch President Obama’s latest interview about financial reform on Good Morning America?  He mentioned that he is trying to teach his daughters basic financial concepts and that they will soon be old enough to babysit to make a little extra cash.

Since Malia is 12 and Sasha is 9, my first thought is, whoa, they’re a little young, right? Then I remembered that these particular 12- and 9-year-olds have their own security detail, which could only be a good thing when things go south.  But, what age would a babysitter need to be for you to consider hiring him or her? Fifteen? Sixteen, so he or she is at least old enough to drive in case of an emergency? Read Full Post

New York City is looking for a new test to measure if kids are gifted, which, on the one hand, is a good thing. Many people actually send preschoolers to prep school to get ready for the test—and others complain (and blow up at each other on message boards) that doing so is unfair.  It does result in a skew of the types of kids that get into the program (wealthier, less diverse). But, the new test could be given to kids as early as 3 years old, which just seems even more wrong to me. Here’s why:

I spent two plus years teaching at a public high school in rural Japan—and was saddened by “one of the best education systems in the world.” I taught at a lower level school where students had already had their cards handed to them by the time they were 13. That was the magic age when they would take a national standardized test and—along with their 8th grade teacher’s recommendation--determine which high school in their area they would ride the train through the misty mountains to every morning. Some hip musicians have been on the kids' show Yo Gabba Gabba!, from the beat boxer Biz Markie to the Ting Tings, but now we know that the Roots are still the kings of rocking out--rocking out with a giant red cyclops and a dude in skinny pants, that is!

A unique TV show called the Nickelodeon Mega Music Fest, featuring preschool characters and serious music stars, was taped on Saturday in Brooklyn and will air on Nickelodeon this summer. It was all about unlikely duos: The Roots crew jammed with Yo Gabba Gabba, Wyclef Jean rocked out with Dora, and Colbie Caillet sang with Ni Hao Kai-Lan. It's too bizarre to miss.

Questlove was singing the praises of Gabba on the "orange carpet" before the show started. He said it was the most intelligent show out there for kids--and that he was nervous about bringing enough energy to the stage. "With a Gabba show, you gotta be on a 12 or 13 out of ten," said the drum-playing impresario.

After the Roots came correct with DJ Lance, Wyclef Jean took the stage with an all-kid band, including his daughter Angelina pounding on a drum, in a La Bamba rendition with an animated Dora on back up. Colbie Caillet did a feel-good duo with Ni Hao Kai-Lan that got plenty of kids in a tizzy. Nick's own Fresh Beat Band and folksy family music darling Laurie Berkner added a more traditional kid-music touch to the show.

John Leguizamo hosted, and, yes, he was as annoying, as expected. But he will get you pumped up for the gianormous musical finale. Check nick.com for show times in your area.
