Writing about parenting before you have kids is like reading the plot synopsis and writing the book report anyway: You might get the facts straight, but you're likely missing the nuances that make the story worthwhile.
Lexi Walters Wright is ready for the whole story.
A longtime pregnancy and parenting writer and editor, Lexi churns words (and blogged about pregnancy after loss) in the sleepy woods of Western Massachusetts. She was due May 2, 2011 and delivered her son on May 11.

31w5d - I woke up with couch creases on my cheek and Samoa crumbs stuck to my jaw two twilights ago to some hack booming MAKE FRESH, ORGANIC, NUTRIENT-RICH BABY FOOD IN AN INSTANT!! And there went my shut-eye for the rest of the night.
I finished watching the infomercial for the Baby Bullet (or thought I had, until the poorly scripted baby shower charade they were using to hawk the smiley baby food blender continued to loop, LOST-like for perhaps another 30 minutes) and took to the Internets. I had recently stripped our baby registry of the Beaba Babycook food steamer-masher after friends gave it a lukewarm review and had since been looking for a potential (less pricey) replacement puree-er. Was it possible that this grinning countertop auto-grinder could fit the bill, solving all the potential kid-feeding problems we were clearly destined to have, as recounted by a bunch of actresses (creepily) pretending to hold infants?
Erm, no.

31w1d - Thanks, all, for your sound advice on birthing classes: I'm grateful for each of your opinions, especially those that specifically advocate dumping any guilt right down the Who Needs It? ravine. After much consideration—and scrutinizing the two remaining calendar pages of this pregnancy—The Mister and I have decided to blend our options, lining up several private sessions at home with the doula/teacher we wanted on nights we know we won't reschedule and reserving some library videos for light (and laughable) watching in between classes. It's the option that ultimately feels like it will work best for our style/schedules/sanity, and all of your insights offered heaps of help while we got there.Read Full Post

30w4d - Veterans of the baby-producing process, I once again ask for your assistance. Our latest quandary: how best to get learned, as a couple, about labor and delivery.
To review, despite 10 years of writing about other people's pregnancies, I have been a complete dolt thus far with respect to my own. The Mister, a man with unparalleled propensity for facts and an innate sense for Doing the Right Thing At the Appropriate Time, has never been at a delivery before, let alone watched his partner transform into some birth beauty-beast.

30w1d - Did we ever babymoon. Sedona was all crimson sand and (slow) desert hikes and many, many naps. It was deep massages à deux and hand-holding while trolling health food stores for snacks.
Still, if I am anything at all, I am a worrier, and this trip didn't switch that trait off. On the peaceful but craggy drive from Scottsdale north to Red Rock Country, I could feel my resolve for this mini-vaca begin to falter. Exactly why were we spending money before the baby arrived on such selfish endeavors?

29w1d - My sister—my favorite lady on the planet—is sitting across from me and studying, headphones in, tongue half-stuck out the way she always does when she's concentrating. Dave Brubeck is streaming from her earbuds loudly enough for me to tap my flip-flop along, but not so loud that I can't try to make her snort at some dimwitted comment every 11 minutes or so. I wonder if that tongue-biting thing is genetic, and whether Tersh will inherit those wonky genes.Read Full Post

28w3d - Oh, the sun! Warmth, America! People of the frigid East Coast, I promise you: Heat does still exist in its natural state, and it can make things right again.
I will not goad you with temperatures or the scant amount of necessary daytime clothing here in the desert, but I will say that I am only wearing a single layer, and I have not thought about my de rigueur wool sweater since I landed. I type away with doors and windows open all day (and oh, does the light last forever!) and snack on grapefruits nabbed from the neighbor's lawn.

27w3d - If the East Coast snow-pounding actually lets up anytime soon, I should be sitting in a swath of Arizona sun by early next week. This is a trip planned out of desperation: I cannot fathom spending any more time indoors here in the woods, avoiding black ice and 6-foot drifts. Is the fact that I've outgrown the only two pairs of heavy winter maternity pants I own enough of a reason to scoot out to Scottsdale? I guess not... Read Full Post

27w1d - Time is doing this taffy-pull maneuver these days. Some evenings, reading in front of the fire, I'll think of something that we need to get settled before Tertiary arrives—schedule The Vaccine Talk with our pediatrician, for example, or finalize our decision on a white noise machine—and I'll flounder from the couch to add it to my Tasks list on my GCalendar. Then I'll notice that there are more items on my to-do than there are days left before this babe comes flailing into the world, and I snap my laptop closed as if any more time spent looking at the list would somehow lengthen it instantaneously and swallow up our remaining kid-free days.Read Full Post

26w3d - I am slowing down. My waddle has become comically pronounced, and heaving myself from cars, off benches, and out of bed onto my feet takes several attempts, leaving me to question whether there's a term akin to 'three-point-turn' for advanced stages of pregnancy. I have clearly taken for granted how many times I roll over throughout the night, because now I need to wake each time and do the brace-shift-topple that's required now that my ab muscles—laughable though they ever were—have packed up and fled for the season. (They are cordially invited back, though. PLEASE RETURN, ABS.)

25w7d - Whooo-eee, are you readers ever diaper smarties. Gigantic thanks to all of you who left your advice on my last post—there was no way I could respond to each of you, but know that I havecombed a half-dozen times through your comments, created a reading/resource list, and will be making some decisions in the coming weeks regarding how to begin tackling our cloth diaper debacle. And I'll certainly holler individually as necessary for more info. Really, your insights are invaluable: It's this crowd-sourced wisdom that seemingly makes parenting in the 21st century easier
Wait, it does, right?
