Good Touch, Bad Touch Talk

I am disgusted over the Penn State sex abuse scandal. This never should have happened. What’s worse is that it did happen and adults failed children. Penn State Assistant Coach, Mike McQueary wrote in an email: “I did stop it, not physically…but made sure it was stopped when I left that locker room…

Substitute Parent

Parents were invited to JD’s school for lunch today. I couldn’t make it because I had to be in the office, forty-minutes away at a freelance magazine job. This is primarily why JD attends a Pre-K 4 program with daycare hours—so I can work. I felt really bad and imagined JD sitting at the table alone while kids ate sandwiches with their moms—and some with their dads. JD was already down one parent.

Croup Cooped Us Up This Weekend

I woke up at midnight on Friday night to a barking dog. My stomach sank, because we don’t have a dog and it wasn’t our neighbor’s pooch either. JD walked slowly into my room moaning, “Mommy” between barks, his little blue blanket trailing behind him. Croup!

Confession: I’m A Mom Micromanager

Yesterday I had a doctor’s appointment so an unnamed babysitter came over to help out. I trust this person completely, so I allowed him to take JD out in the car. But I completely mom micromanaged the situation.

How Do Single Moms Do It?

Today at the park my married mom friend, Regan, said: “Whenever I get to sleep-in, I think of you and I want to come over in the morning and get JD so you can sleep.” She has two girls under 4 and her husband trades off with her so she can sleep-in some days. I never get to sleep-in, but I’ll let you in on a little secret. I’m used to it. I was even used to it on Sunday when the time change had Mr. JD up at 4:30 AM. “Can I watch Cars 2 and have some cereal.” Guess who watched Cars 2 and ate cereal in my bed at 4:30 AM? Yeah.

A Brush With Bullying. In Preschool!?

Yesterday I picked JD up from school and drilled him on his day while we drove to meet our friends for dinner. JD told me someone made fun of him. My mouth dropped open and I almost turned around, but I was driving. Did JD have his first run-in with a bully? At 4!? In Preschool!?

Understanding Parental Abandonment: Q & A With Dr. Leah Klungness

Hello and sorry for the delay! My Internet got knocked out thanks to OctSNOWber. Last week’s blog prompted a lot of feedback in the comments and via personal messages. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Dr. Leah is back to answer some of your questions.

Understanding Parental Abandonment: My Lightbulb Moment

Five years ago to the day tomorrow, I met JD’s father. I was dressed as a ballerina. He was dressed as a pirate. We were at a bar on the LES that has since closed down. My friend, Claire, spotted him from across the bar and whispered into my ear, “he’s cute.” He was. And he was to be, my son’s father.

Bed Stealers: Do Your Kids Crash In Your Bed?

Last night I collapsed in my bed after a long day that started at 5:30 AM: Breakfast, Pre-school drop-off, freelance work at a magazine office until 5 PM, dinner at the diner with my Mom and JD, play-time, shower, books and bed for JD, then back to work for me. I teach an online writing class and I’m in the middle of a four-week session. When the chat session ended, I dove into my bed and turned on the TV. By 11 PM I was half-asleep and turned off the tube. At 11:30 PM I heard little feet…

How Steve Jobs Met His Biological Father: You Won't Believe It

On October 5, 2011 we lost a genius. Steve Jobs was undeniably best known as the co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple, Inc. And he was also from a modern family. In the new biography, Steve Jobs, author Walter Isaacson reveals Jobs’ thoughts on being adopted and details his journey to uncover his birth parents.
