As if yeast infections weren’t common enough, thankyouverymuch, skinny jeans trend, they’re even more common during pregnancy. And while a low, 150 mg, single dose of fluconazole (Diflucan) appears to be a safe way to treat a vaginal yeast infection, the FDA has ordered new labeling for the drug, warning that if pregnant women take multiple, high doses of the antifungal, it may increase the risk of birth defects.Read Full Post

My first son was born in a hospital on a Saturday, and, as per the advice of more seasoned moms, I immediately asked to see the hospital’s lactation consultant for some help getting started breastfeeding. In response, I got on a two-day-long waiting list—in fact, the LC finally came into my room as I was packing up to head home with my newborn and some already cracked and sore nipples. Apparently, I’m far from the only one who hasn’t received some much-needed breastfeeding support in-hospital: a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that hospitals are doing far too little to encourage new mothers to breastfeed. Read Full Post

Some new moms face bigger than average challenges when trying to breastfeed their newborns. And so was the case for Eva van Dok Pinkley, a New York-based actress and magazine researcher who was unable to breastfeed her newborn son because she had a double mastectomy last year. Fortunately, 25 other new moms came to her rescue by offering to donate their breast milk to her son, Oliver, reports the New York Daily News.Read Full Post

Are you pregnant and planning to breastfeed? While a good breast pump is a must-have for many nursing moms (especially for those who want to continue breastfeeding after returning to work), it’s also a hefty purchase. (And although the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services just announced new guidelines requiring new health insurance plans to cover women’s preventive services like well-woman visits, contraception and breastfeeding support, supplies and counseling, those changes won’t take place until August of 2012.) Fortunately, our sister magazine, Babytalk, is giving away four great breast pumps now—just enter by September 1st! Read Full Post

Several hours into middle-of-the-night labor with my first son, I gave into the nurses’ offers of pain relief and accepted an epidural. Shortly after that, I was more comfortable but my contractions had subsided, leading to my doctor ordering a round of Pitocin. Many of those of us who have given birth in a hospital are personally (and reluctantly) familiar with Pitocin, a drug used to move labor along—and often causes contractions to come far more quickly and painfully. A new analysis has found that although Pitocin is a safe and effective way to speed childbirth, it does not reduce the number of c-sections or deliveries via forceps, reports the New York Times.Read Full Post

Whether it’s in the pre-baby years or after you’ve achieved a full house, for most couples, birth control tends to fall on the woman’s shoulders. While there is a virtual buffet of options available to women, including pills, patches, shots and IUDs, their male partners have been limited to condoms or vasectomies—until now. Read Full Post

Move aside, rhythm method! Stand back, expensive co-pays! A leading medical advisory panel recommended yesterday that birth control be classified as preventive medicine—ultimately meaning that all insurers could be required to cover contraceptives for women free of charge under President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. Read Full Post
