If you have a child going into Kindergarten next fall, not only are you’re busy picking out a school, you're probably wondering if he or she is ready.

I've been there. When my oldest daughter was four, she was mostly ready to go but . . . as it turns out, I hadn't taught her left from right or to tie her shoe!

How the heck are you supposed to know these things?

'My heart is broken' I read over and over again. Teachers across the country feel not fear, but a deep sadness.

But their  sadness is filled with resolve and determination to keep children safe, to help every single child who might be struggling, and to continue creating an environment of happiness and learning. To show support and solidarity for the Sandy Hook community, most teacher-bloggers went offline on Monday.

Planning for the worst-case scenario (bear attacks included) helps me fall asleep.

...if our house caught on fire, we’d use the ladder and hook it on the window...

...if someone bad came in the window to attack us, I’d use the lamp to fight him, wrapping the cord around his neck...

It’s not so different in our schools.

Your kids will be reading a lot more non-fiction from now on. The Common Core English Standards requires 50% of the reading in elementary and 70% by 12th grade to be non-fiction. The Washington Post revealed that there is a lot of controversy over the amount of non-fiction reading.Read Full Post
