My first grade daughter's excused absences totaled 27, the January letter reported. The letter warned that any more absences and we'd be referred to a truancy officer.

Across the country in cities like Dallas, Atlanta, and Lynchburg parents like me are facing worse than warning letters -- they're facing hundreds of dollars in fines and jail time if the fines aren't paid.

26,000 Chicago teachers are on strike as of September 9, picketing at 675 schools.

The 404,000 mostly low-income students are either at home, at one of the 144 schools still open (like the charter schools), or at a non-profit center's strike camp.

No one can say how long the strike will last because to end, the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) and Chicago Mayor, Rahm Emanuel must find some way to resolve these critical issues:

Remember when we thought we'd be living in the Jetson's world in the future? But, when I read about the Gates Foundation's Galvanic Skin Response monitors, it seemed more like a Brave New World than the Jetsons. The Galvanic Skin Response monitors (GSR) measure a student's focus on instruction. The monitors assess the body's electrical activity which supposedly corresponds to mood and arousal.

Bill Nye, from the 90's PBS show “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” released a video last week titled "Creationism Is Not Appropriate For Children ."

Nye says that teaching creationism is making our country weak. "When you have a portion of the population that doesn't believe in that, it holds everybody back, really."
