After years of sitting in offices reading blogs, Maggie Cheung became a stay-at-home mom to Jackson in May 2007. She admits her diaper-changing, playground-going, spoon-feeding lifestyle affords considerably less time for blog reading, but she infinitely prefers it to commutes and cubicles. Maggie is married to Phillip, The Devastatingly Handsome Chinese Man, and when they aren't coaxing the boy to eat his dinner, they are hunched over their respective laptops at the dining room table. Maggie strongly believes in the parenting philosophy known as Whatever Works, even if her personal website is all about detailing her many failings in this area. She hopes to do a better job of not freaking out with her second baby, a daughter, who arrived in September 2008. Visit Mighty Maggie's blog.

I'm tired. I'm covered in baby barf. I'm a little anxious about the baby. I'm exhausted from breaking up all the stupid little fights. AND I've gone off carbs. Excellent timing!Read Full Post

POLL! How early is too early to take your newborn out of the house? Like, say, to Goodwill where you want to hunt down some midcentury glassware and candlesticks for spray painting and Gorilla gluing purposes, because your pregnancy-fueled Pinterest obsession turned you into this giant quasi-DIY freak and you absolutely cannot help yourself?

Or, you know, to Target, where the normal moms go. ???????

I know we're barely three weeks into Having Three Kids and I also know that when you're positive about parenting on the Internet you're only jinxing yourself, but I'm gonna say it anyway: three kids? CAKE.

(Oooh, the Steadfast Never Fails Law of the Internet is TOTALLY going to bite me back on this one, isn't it. Look forward to next week's post: CHILDREN FOR SALE: GROUP RATE!)

There is a looming sadness over the Cheung household tonight as Phillip and I have been talking about the passing of Steve Jobs and the impact of Apple computers in our lives. I have to admit, at first I thought we (by which I mean Apple fanboy Phillip Cheung) were being a BIT dramatic to have such a personal reaction, but you know, Apple gadgets really HAVE affected life as I know it, especially now that I have kids.Read Full Post

I am thirty-seven weeks pregnant. You know what that means? It means: ANY TIME NOW, KID!

On account of this pregnancy being wholly and utterly average, without complications, without extremes of any kind, I've tried pretty hard not to whine too much online. (Um, sorry if you know me in real life.) I am super excited about this baby, super grateful that everything's gone well, and I am super aware of all the stories out there that aren't as easy and uncomplicated as mine, so I know better than to whine.

Except, I am thirty-seven weeks pregnant. And you know what that means? I AM DONE.

Dear Jack and Molly, aka my Future Honor Roll Students, Class Presidents, and Valedictorians OBVS,

I can't believe you are both going to school this year. PREschool, but still. SCHOOL. With teachers and worksheets and backpacks and schedules and already I require the services of a personal masseuse to deal with the pressure. The pressure on ME, I should say, as you two cheerfully disappeared into your respective classrooms without so much as a glance at your poor neurotic mother. Seriously, kindergarten will probably kill me.

GIRL. Girl! We would have been thrilled with a boy, of course, but here I am thinking about all the adorable little girl clothes I can use AGAIN. And the shoes! And the baby clippies! And girly bedroom decor! Shallow? Sure! Worth getting excited about anyway? Definitely.

I mentioned here that we weren't sure we were going to find out, and I was still waffling on this point up until a few days ago. See, we hadn't mentioned Third Baby much to the other kids, just because we've been busy. Okay okay, the REAL reason is that the last time I talked about Third Baby with the kids they wanted to know how the baby comes OUT of your tummy and I just wasn't up for that discussion.

Tonight my little multi-racial family will meet the Chinese grandparents at the lone acceptable Chinese restaurant in downtown Seattle, "acceptable" meaning "my father-in-law is friendly with the owner AND there is free parking". We'll be dining with another family, friends of my in-laws I've never met before, and all of this to properly kick off Chinese New Year. (Or Lunar New Year, as my Korean BFF never fails to correct me.)

I meant to DO Chinese New Year this year. We live in a city with a large Asian-American population and I know there are ways to really celebrate. A foodwalk, a parade, even a Prettiest Bunny contest to usher in the Year of the Rabbit! But once again I fell down on the job. I talked to my mom on the phone last night - NOT one of the Chinese grandparents - and she demanded to know if we'd taken the kids to the parade. "It looked so fun! So many little kids!" And I was all, "WHAT? IT ALREADY HAPPENED?"

Today I have discussed with my three-year-old, in no particular order of importance or length or intensity, the following subjects: "But WHY is our car blue, Mommy?" "WHY do we eat peanut butter?" "Why that fly in here?" "But WHY is there no more apple juice?" And my favorite daily discussion, "What you DOING Mommy? Why you DOING that?"

Would you believe that only a year and a half ago I was wringing my hands over his tiny vocabulary, his utter disinterest in communicating verbally, the way his pediatrician clucked her tongue when I told her how many words he could say at fifteen months? I'd read blogs of other mothers complaining about their chatty children and I felt so sorry for myself, disbelieving such a day would ever arrive in the Cheung household.

If my bleeding ears are any indication, that day is now upon me and OMG IT IS NEVER GOING TO SHUT UP.
