After years of sitting in offices reading blogs, Maggie Cheung became a stay-at-home mom to Jackson in May 2007. She admits her diaper-changing, playground-going, spoon-feeding lifestyle affords considerably less time for blog reading, but she infinitely prefers it to commutes and cubicles. Maggie is married to Phillip, The Devastatingly Handsome Chinese Man, and when they aren't coaxing the boy to eat his dinner, they are hunched over their respective laptops at the dining room table. Maggie strongly believes in the parenting philosophy known as Whatever Works, even if her personal website is all about detailing her many failings in this area. She hopes to do a better job of not freaking out with her second baby, a daughter, who arrived in September 2008. Visit Mighty Maggie's blog.

This past weekend marked the start of a new era in the Cheung Household. I'll call it The Grad School Days. For the next two years, my husband will be working full time and attending class on Friday nights and Saturdays. I'll be home, holding down the fort, one hand changing the channel to Sesame Street and the other hand lifting my glass of wine. Read Full Post

When the boy wouldn't eat his dinner tonight, we put on our bright "Oh well!" faces, let him down, and cleared the dishes. But a few hours later we broke down and heated up one of those Costco corn dogs his grandmother introduced him to over the weekend. What are we going to do? Send him to bed without dinner? At one end of the potty training enthusiasm scale we have the elimination communication folks holding their pantsless babies over their heads in triumph, and at the other end we have your trusty blogger, cowering behind a small fort of diapers and timidly shouting, "I don't WANT to go potty!"

So, yeah, maybe I'm a little anxious.

I have a friend who has achieved every kind of success known to womankind, from school and career to perfect hair and flawless skin, but her mother is deeply disappointed in my friend's choice of future husband. It's unfathomable to me, that such a thing could cancel out the entire string of her life's A-pluses, but I suppose it's difficult to let go of the picture you create for your child's future. When Jack was about five months old we went on a little weekend getaway, just the three of us. We drove a few hours out of town to a little lake resort, got ourselves a nice hotel room and proceeded to enjoy...nothing. As my husband likes to put it, we were doing all the things we normally do at home, just without the benefit of home's conveniences. Read Full Post

Long long ago, before I had kids, before I was even entertaining the IDEA of kids, I went clothes shopping with my sister-in-law. SIL is the kind of person who can talk you into spending your mortgage payment on a skirt you'll wear maybe once, or maybe not even once. So ordinarily a shopping trip with SIL is a super fun time. Except we were shopping for kids' clothes. Specifically, t-shirts with pictures of bugs on the front, the uglier the better. "Conner is into bugs right now," she informed me, whipping through the clearance rack at the GAP. Read Full Post

It seems like every other month or so my son decides to spend time in the Little Imp Gym, working out his "NO!" muscle and running Escape from Mommy sprints. I don't know what it is -- Grandma Withdrawal Syndrome since coming home from our trip? Just getting back to normal? The full moon? -- but Jack is currently experimenting with every button I have, trying to find out what happens when he pushes them all at the exact same time. I am trying to come up with a counterattack that doesn't bring CPS to my house. Read Full Post

This morning I flew to Las Vegas with my husband, my kids, and my in-laws. In fact, I am writing this very post from the middle of my king-sized hotel room bed, fifteen feet away from the largest bathtub I have ever seen in my life. This hotel suite is SWANK, people, with seemingly more space than my own HOUSE, and property management may have to drag me out of here by my sopping wet fresh-out-of-the-amazing-pool ponytail. (Although that may have more to do with not wanting to endure what it will take to get myself, my husband, my kids, and my in-laws back to our own homes.) Read Full Post
