After years of sitting in offices reading blogs, Maggie Cheung became a stay-at-home mom to Jackson in May 2007. She admits her diaper-changing, playground-going, spoon-feeding lifestyle affords considerably less time for blog reading, but she infinitely prefers it to commutes and cubicles. Maggie is married to Phillip, The Devastatingly Handsome Chinese Man, and when they aren't coaxing the boy to eat his dinner, they are hunched over their respective laptops at the dining room table. Maggie strongly believes in the parenting philosophy known as Whatever Works, even if her personal website is all about detailing her many failings in this area. She hopes to do a better job of not freaking out with her second baby, a daughter, who arrived in September 2008. Visit Mighty Maggie's blog.

Jack turned two on Sunday, and that was poor planning, wasn't it? Turning two on Mother's Day? Which is why we had his party on Saturday. Like I am going to SHARE Mother's Day.

I can't believe I have a two-year-old, you guys. I mean, when we were discussing this whole baby thing, my daydreams never got past, oh, nine months. Walking? Talking? And (heaven help me) potty training? Yeah, never thought about it.

Dear Mother's Day,

It appears I cannot give my mother a nice scarf or a good book or a lunch out -- as the mother of her grandchildren I am required to be CRAFTY. Please note, Mother's Day, I do not have a crafty bone in my body. All previous attempts at craftiness ended up in the trash, down the disposal or burned in the fireplace. I feel this obligatory handmade grandchild gift sets too high a standard, especially since the grandchildren have yet to even master a crayon. Have pity on me, Mother's Day. What about a nice geranium, hmm?

The neighborhood playground is about a ten minute walk from my house. In honor of the glorious spring weather, the kids and I trooped over to fulfill the daily wear-them-out requirement. Across the street are about a dozen townhouses, houses we briefly considered when we were looking to buy, and every time we go to the playground I think, "Gee, if we lived HERE I'd only have to walk across the STREET."

I know, right? Could I BE more lazy?

I've never been one of those moms to wax annoyingly rhapsodic over her pre-kid days, that glorious time when I could go wherever I wanted at any time I wanted. No way would I send Jack and Molly back to the manufacturer so I can go back to sleeping in on Saturdays.

That said, I'm just going to be flat out honest and say: life with a toddler and a baby has put a serious cramp in my style.

Remember when I was all, "My baby! She sleeps through the night! Should I tempt the universe and move her into her brother's room?" That was almost FOUR MONTHS ago people. And guess who is still sleeping in the closet? Read Full Post

An average night in the Cheung household looks kind of like this:

7pm: Phillip puts Molly to bed.

7:30pm: Maggie puts Jack to bed. Unless Maggie wants to blog, or cook dinner, or shop online, or talk on the phone, or eat bon bons, or paint her toenails and then Phillip puts Jack to bed.

If there's one phase of Jack's babyhood that I despised, that I don't miss, that I would cheerfully skip without a backward glance, it would be Starting Solid Foods. If you weren't already banging your head against the wall with the breastfeeding and the not sleeping and the nonexistent nap schedule and the teething, welcome to Solid Foods, your new reason to weep.
