School Cupcake Toppers Stir Controversy
March 11, 2013

Are plastic army figures inappropriate for school? A 9-year-old boy’s parents were taken to task for chocolate treats decorated with the iconic green miniature plastic men holding guns.
Fountain’s wife made 30 birthday cupcakes that her son Hunter spruced up with World War Two army figures. She brought the cupcakes to Schall Elementary School in Michigan for Hunter to enjoy with his third-grade classmates. The phone rang about 15 minutes later. “(T)he school called my wife and told her the(y) couldn't serve the cupcakes because the soldiers had guns," Fountain told Fox News. "My wife told them to remove the soldiers and serve the cupcakes anyway -- and I believe she may have used more colorful language." The soldiers were removed and returned to Hunter.

“It disgusted me,” Casey Fountain, the boy’s father, told Fox News. “It’s vile they lump true American heroes with psychopathic killers.”
Principal Susan Wright released a statement that backed up her decision to remove the figures. "These are toys that were commonplace in the past," she said in the statement. "However, some parents prohibit all guns as toys. In light of that difference, the school offered to replace the soldiers with another item and the soldiers were returned home with the student.”
"In the climate of recent events in schools we walk a delicate balance in teaching non-violence in our buildings and trying to ensure a safe, peaceful atmosphere," she later added.

Fountain told Fox News that the comparison between the soldiers and high school shooters was beyond outrageous. “In our politically correct society they can’t separate the good from the bad,” he said. ”I’m sure hammers are allowed in schools — although a lot of people are killed by hammers.”
Do you think that the decision was justified, or was it going too far? Leave a comment.
