Meet the 2012 Mom Congress Arkansas Delegate
May 30, 2012
Amy Palmer is the 2012 Mom Congress Delegate for Arkansas. She is originally from the St. Louis area, but has made Little Rock her home for the past 12 years. She married her college sweetheart and they have three rambunctious but fun kids. When she is not chauffeuring her daughter to after-school activities or chasing her sons, she enjoys reading, playing tennis and researching and planning her family's next adventure.
One thing that is going great in education in your state: Arkansas has some great parent volunteers that are committed to making our schools the best, safest, healthiest places possible for our children to learn.
One thing you wish could be improved in education in your state: More financial resources would improve all manner of challenges that face Arkansas’ schools.
Secret indulgence: Reality TV! I don’t think that my husband and I have ever missed an episode of Survivor.
Your hero: My childhood friend, Gretchen Brockmann, has long been my hero. Gretchen lost her battle with cancer at age 12. She fought a brave battle and at the end, she displayed grace and dignity far beyond her years. Her life and the way she lived it was an amazing gift to me at a young age. She continues to inspire me to live my life with a grateful heart and a generous spirit as an honor to her memory.
Favorite extracurricular activities when you were in school: My love for tennis started in high school. I still play several times a week.
Biggest wish for your kids: I pray that my children will be able to maintain their fresh optimistic outlook for a lifetime. They greet each day with such zest and excitement now. Childhood is so fleeting. I pray that they will be able to preserve that approach to life and use it during adulthood. If they tackle adulthood with the same zest and fervor, they will be able to accomplish amazing things!
Most rewarding/challenging stage of parenthood thus far (and why): Twin potty training! No question, potty training twin boys was the most challenging stage of parenthood to date. It was physically exhausting, mentally challenging, and emotionally draining! However, once it was completed, I felt like we could survive anything!
Favorite family tradition: My family lives for our summer trip to the beach. We plan for this one week all year. It is easily my favorite week of the year, one of the rare weeks when we can truly focus on each other and on being the kind of family we strive to be during the other 51 weeks of the year.
Favorite family activities: As a family, we are always up for an adventure. We love to hike, travel or go on a trip to the zoo.
Favorite weeknight family dinner: Tacos and chips and salsa; super quick to make, leaving more time to sit around the table to visit.
