Meet the 2012 Mom Congress Illinois Delegate
August 1, 2012
Liesl "Lisa" Stiegman is the 2012 Mom Congress Delegate for Illinois. She has worked in advertising, publishing, writing and teaching. The constant in Lisa's life seems to be somewhat related to that of a community organizer—she seems to gravitate to that. She is grateful to have a supportive family and enjoy life and “down time” on the Fox River with her husband and three children.
What book is currently on your nightstand? There are stacks, just waiting!
One thing that is going great in education in your state: People are just beginning to pay attention to the problems.
One thing you wish could be improved in education in your state: Financing. Our state suffers from severe financial problems and continues to be behind with payments owed to schools.
Your favorite teacher (and why): Mr. Mellen, my high school honors English teacher. He had very high standards for us, his material was challenging and he provided me with valuable feedback in my writing. Freshman year in college, I received my first less than stellar grade on some writing and I made a visit back to high school to see him for some advice that helped me to succeed on campus.
Your hero: My Mother–Golden Apple Award Winning teacher/administrator and excellent mother!
Favorite quote: A great friend sent me this regarding our volunteer efforts for the PTO: "Start Where You Are. Use What You Have. Do What You Can." – Arthur Ashe
Favorite extracurricular activities when you were in school: Youth and Government, French Club, Cager Girls, Yearbook.
Biggest wish for your kids: That their education provides them with the opportunity to pursue something that makes them happy and fulfilled in life.
Most rewarding/challenging stage of parenthood thus far (and why): The most challenging time of parenthood for me was having three kids all under five in diapers at the same time! Talk about dry, raw hands (from all the hand washing I did)! The reward continues on every day at every stage. At times I miss the adorableness of baby/toddlerhood—but I enjoy their growing independence and new “adventures” we can share together as they are growing up.
Favorite family tradition: Giving a Christmas ornament to each child every year that signifies a special talent, activity, interest, or event that represents them and preserves a memory. I accompany the ornament with a short explanation of why I chose it for them.
