Meet the 2012 Mom Congress New Mexico Delegate

Anne Gibson is the 2012 Mom Congress Delegate for New Mexico. She describes New Mexico as a land of enchantment – a beautiful mix of alpine mountains, stark desert, glistening white sands and Native American culture. Anne wouldn’t live anywhere else! She resides with her husband in the mountains with their horses, goats, chickens, cats, dogs and kids. She must commute 45 miles one way to school but loves every moment of the adventure. Anne has a juris doctorate, practices law pro bono and teaches fulltime at Volcano Vista High School.

What book is currently on your nightstand? An anthology of American literature.

One thing that is going great in education in your state: Not much, unfortunately. New Mexico is currently ranked at the very bottom in most areas—lots of work and no money to change things.

One thing you wish could be improved in education in your state: Funding.

Your favorite teacher (and why): Ms. Susan Jarrett—my 11^th grade English teacher. She gave me the ability to dream outside of the box and not be afraid to stay there!

Secret indulgence: A hot bath.

Your hero: My husband, a teacher who has spent more than 25 years in special education.

Favorite subject in school (and why): English. I love to read and escape in the words. It is fascinating how what we read shapes our ideas and dreams.

Biggest wish for your kids: That they never stop learning and being kids!

Most rewarding/challenging stage of parenthood thus far (and why): Teenagers! Need I say more? Lol.

Favorite family tradition: Dinner—we always make time for cooking a meal and sitting down together.

Favorite family activities: Camping, fishing and anything outside!

Favorite weeknight family dinner: Chicken with tomato cream sauce.
