Meet the 2012 Mom Congress Alabama Delegate
May 9, 2012
We had a fantastic time at Mom Congress! Now that we're back, we'll introduce you to each of the inspirational women we've chosen as our 2012 delegates—one state will be highlighted each week, starting with Beth Zaiontz from Alabama. Beth works with community groups to improve legislation and education for children with special needs. She has been married to the love of her life and best friend Henry for 16 years. They have been blessed with two wonderful daughters Maddie, age 8, and Emma, age 10. They enjoy all the challenges and rewards of parenting!
What book is currently on your nightstand? Cup of Comfort for Parents of Children with Autism: Stories of Hope and Everyday Success.
One thing that is going great in education in your state: The Alabama Riley Ward Autism Insurance Reform Bill is in the final stages and adding coverage for autism to insurance will give more children living with autism a better start at life by adding coverage for therapies which in turn will make inclusion a more successful option.
One thing you wish could be improved in education in your state: The financial budget situation so there would be more money to invest in the future of the state.
Your favorite teacher (and why): Dr. Elaine Klotz because she always had faith in me and gave me the additional help I needed to succeed and encouraged me not to give up when challenges came my way!
Secret indulgence: Chocolate Iced Krispy Kreme Donuts.
Your hero: Dr. Temple Grandin and her mother.
Favorite quote: “When one door of happiness closes another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened before us.” ― Helen Keller
Favorite subject in school (and why): Math—it was interesting to me!
Biggest wish for your kids: For both of them to grow up to become happy and productive additions to society. Also, allowing them to find their passion and help foster that desire.
Favorite family tradition: Going to beach for the 4th of July.
