Learn About the 4th of July and the Olympics On My New Favorite Website

July 3, 2012

Anyone else feeling a little shocked that it's already July? The 4th of July and the Olympics are almost here!

My kids need to know about our country's independence, I need to find some fun learning activities by tomorrow. Also, this year we're so excited about the Olympics because one swimmer, Missy Franklin,  lives in the next neighborhood next to us.

To add learning to the summer, about the Fourth or the Olympics, I recommend visiting Start with a Book, a new website by Reading Rockets. It's my life-saver; maybe yours, too. Use it to get ideas for books to read, activities to do, and apps to try. Plus there's reading aloud tips, writing ideas, websites, videos, and a free texting plan that texts three to four literacy tips per week for the summer. Amazing, right?

So for tomorrow, I'm going to the Our country and the 4th of July page. Then, for the Olympics, I'm going to the Sports and Olympics page

Later this summer, I'll visit pages on artists, builders, detectives, dinosaurs, flight, or money. There's 24 themes in all - enough to keep anyone learning for months - or at least eight weeks of summer.

Watch author Jon Scieszka as he suggests ways to motivate boys to read. This video, and many like it, will keep us parents learning, too.

Happy Independence Day!
