When Feeding the Brain, Start with Dessert

I am constantly struck by the similarities between feeding children and reading to them.  There are some obvious ones: both activities involve nurturing; both require engagement and cooperation; in both situations there is the potential for power-struggles, frustration, and messes that need to be cleaned up. (OK, maybe a book doesn’t make as much of a mess as, say, oatmeal; but you get the point.)

A Bus Filled With Books

Mary Pope Osborne, author of the popular early chapter book series, The Magic Tree House, just gave all 4,300 third graders in Newark, NJ a 28-book Magic Tree House boxed set!  Why? Middle School Bans Hugging

A middle school in New York has placed a ban on hugging between classes. Although it sounds like the plot of a Footloose sequel (Armloose?), Brooklyn Prospect Charter School’s principal Dan Rubinstein said that the ban was created to keep the students from lingering in the hallways.

iPads in Schools - What's Working

My daughter’s fourth grade class is using iPads to play the Stock Market Game. So far she’s invested in the movie company behind Hunger Games, Apple computer and Procter and Gamble.  She uses my iPad at home to check her stock performance.

Like in my daughter's classroom, iPads are being used by more students than ever.

The Teaching Garden

Dr. Seuss’ timeless story, The Lorax, reinforces what we as moms instinctively know – when kids plant the seeds and nurture and harvest the plants, they learn the value of good eating habits and appreciate the environment.
