Last month I posted our list of things that we were going to do this summer, 101 Things to be exact. Some we have added since the list published.
It had been my son's idea to come up with a list of things that we could check off. To make sure we didn't forget anything, he said. Good idea, I said, as a mother who is long on ideas but short on the follow through.
9. Dance outside after dark holding sparklers in each hand:

Isn't that saying? That bad luck always comes in groups of three? Like celebrities always die in groups of three, which I suppose is really is only unfortunate to the dead person. But after the second thing happens you just wait for the third and final thing, so you can exhale.

If I ever have a complete and total nervous breakdown, it isn't going to be the direct result of some major event. It is going to be an everyday occurrence that finally pushes me right over the edge.
It is going to occur because one of my children turned the toaster to the darkest setting after using it and I was the unfortunate person who tried to make toast next and ended up with the last two pieces of bread in the house turned to charcoal.

As I turn thirty-nine, I present the top ten reasons why I know I am getting old.
10) I use the word comfortable when describing my ideal clothing and the word practical when shopping for shoes. I look at the "fashionable" clothes that teenagers are wearing, and laugh. Though I will go on record saying that I will never wear stockings with open toe shoes. Why do old people do this? Was this ever a good look? Or is it just that they have become so practical that they want to keep their feet warm and wear the shoes they like?

Saturday we were at the baseball field. My 7 year old had a game and the other kids had their team photos, conveniently staggered hours apart from each other. In the afternoon, my 13 year old son was going to umpire a AA game, which is played by mostly 9-and 10-year-old boys.

I have a child
who is so bad
He makes me yell.
He makes me mad.
who is so bad
He makes me yell.
He makes me mad.
I hear him running on the stairs,
But when I look, there's no one there.
He scatters toys across the lawn.
He sets alarms to ring at dawn
He skips and bounces down the hall.
He knocks the pictures off the wall.
He takes the cushions off the couch.
He spits chewed food out of his mouth.

My 10 year old son began working on a list of things he wants to do this summer. He said that he always thinks he will have plenty of time to do all the things he wants, but then suddenly summer is over and he never gets around to it.
I don't have the heart to tell him that it is called life.
Instead, I embraced his list making, and we have been making a family list of things to do this summer. A list that is ambitiously titled "101 Things To Do This Summer", even though we haven't listed that many yet.

Last week I was traveling with my gigantic suitcase, because my theory on packing is if it fits into my suitcase, I can bring it with me. I was wrestling with it on stairs, both because it is too large for me to carry easily and because I was also trying to manage my purse and a laptop bag.

Last week I heard about this story of a woman who allowed her 9 yr old son to ride the subway alone and make his way home to their apartment. Ironically enough, I was in New York City at the time.
At first I was aghast. My goodness, who in their right mind would ever let a 9 yr old out of their sight in the dangerous city? Much less allow him to navigate the subway system. But then I read the article the mother wrote for The Sun in which she explains herself:

We have a new birthday tradition at our house that started quite by accident. As soon as they are able, the birthday kids bake their own cakes. All by themselves with very little input from me, aside from buying the ingredients.
Sunday morning I had to do a few errands and I asked the birthday child what kind of cake I should pick up at the bakery. He answered that he was going to be baking his cake himself. And not only that, he had elaborate plans that involved two layers of different kinds of cake and two different frostings.
