I've been waiting to go get my flu shot until we make an important out-of-town trip this weekend. I don't know if it's all in my head or actually a side effect of the vaccine, but every single time I get the flu shot, I end up with the sniffles for a couple of days after. I consider it a small price to pay to avoid the actual flu (which I had two years running while living in Eastern Europe -- oy!), but I try to be strategic about it nonetheless.
So, of course, although I tried to plan ahead and stay healthy this week, my toddler brought home some sort of nasty bug from daycare and I've been laid up half the week anyway. Argh.
On Tuesday night, I was out cold by 7 p.m. I went to work Wednesday, but spent most of the day with my head in the clouds, then came home and passed out on the couch by 8. Today, I stayed home from work entirely to try to rest up and get over this, but my little one woke up sick and cranky this morning, so although I felt like death warmed over, I kept her home from daycare so I could keep an eye on her.
Can I just say that while taking care of a sick child while sick yourself is just awful, taking care of a sick child while sick AND pregnant is downright unbearable.
Where I would normally just curl up on the couch with a glass of water, and moan and groan through several hours of bad movies and cat naps, I now have to deal with getting up to pee every half an hour and being unable to actually be comfortable on the couch for any length of time thanks to this bump I'm sporting. And when the sick kiddo refuses to nap, I also have to entertain and play, make a proper lunch, and tend to her needs as well. Let's just say that Ms. Poppy watched a lot more t.v. and drank a lot more juice today than I would normally allow, but we were running in survival mode and I don't regret a moment of it.
Fortunately, my husband was able to cut out of work a bit early today and come home to baby us. He managed to walk in the door at the exact moment that Poppy woke up from her much-delayed afternoon nap and if I weren't so exhausted, I would've jumped up from the couch to kiss him for it. Now, the kiddo is in bed, the husband is watching the World Series, and I'm back on the couch, curled up in my favorite blanket, laptop at hand, belly full of chicken soup, and a hot cup of tea by my side. I'm feeling less whiny and sorry for myself now that I'm starting to feel like I'm coming around (proof: it's 8:45 and I'm still coherent!) and grateful that I ought to be over this and in the clear to still keep our weekend travel plans.
And, yes, I know. In the grand scheme of things, this is all a very minor problem to have. I'm very grateful for all of our long-term health, happiness, and well-being and am fully appreciative. But sometimes you just need to get a good whine out before you can move on. Consider this mine.
What are your favorite family cold remedies? Do you have any tried and true solutions to feeling better faster, especially for pregnant women for whom the usual list of pharmaceuticals is largely off limits? Or do you just grin and bear it until the whole mess passes?
