Getting ready for my dinner date!
© Melanie at Parenting.com
26w, 6d. This weekend was equal parts amazing and unique because I got to ditch parenthood for a quick moment in time. Yep, I managed to have a childfree weekend (well, fetus not withstanding).
As a stay-at-home mom, I’m with my kids a lot these days. And despite their both being in full-day schooling, they still have as much energy as one might expect of three- and five-year-old boys. Unsurprisingly, I don’t have that kind of energy, so when my aunt and uncle asked if my five-year-old, Ben, might want to stay with them for a weekend, just like I used to do when I was a kid, I jumped at their offer. And because my husband is taking Ben to visit his family in Arkansas next month, our three-year-old, Henry, had already been asking him for a special weekend alone with Daddy. Somehow, I managed to make both of those special weekends away happen simultaneously and got to benefit from some kid-free time to myself.
Yes, I still went to bed before 10 pm and woke up before 5 am (thank you, early rising preschooler who has me trained to rise well before the sun), but once I was up, my time was my own! On Saturday morning, I spent two hours in bed (fruitlessly) searching for a new rug for the nursery. I then leisurely wandered through our local farmers’ market, met three girlfriends for brunch, went for a facial with one of them, and then unexpectedly joined her for a fancy dinner in Manhattan when her husband couldn’t make their dinner date at the last minute. I didn’t have to rush back to relieve a babysitter or get up with a scared-of-the-dark toddler in the middle of the night. It was kind of amazing.
I spent Sunday doing pretty mundane things like, um, four loads of laundry and hemming curtains for the nursery, which might be kind of lame, but I enjoyed just having the chance to get stuff done without interruption. I know that in a few short months, I’ll rarely have my hands to myself and we’ll live in perpetual chaos for some time, so it was pretty sweet to have some peace and quiet and a chance to just knock some tasks off of my list.
If you had a childfree weekend to yourself, how would you spend it? I want to hear all of the indulgent details; let me know in the comments!
