California Governor Jerry brown has signed a bill that prevents local governments from passing bans on circumcision. You may remember there was an effort late last year to make circumcision a crime in San Francisco, followed by a lawsuit from a group of physicians, Jews and Muslims, who argued that local governments cannot restrict medical procedures. A new study published in the latest issue of Pediatrics found that fewer hospitals are giving new moms samples of formula, although most still are. In an earlier 2007 study, just 14% of hospitals studied refrained from sending home formula samples. In 2010, twice as many of the same hospitals had gone sample pack-free.Read Full Post

You’ve heard breast milk called the perfect food and liquid gold. One couple believes so strongly in the nutritional value of breast milk, and the tragedy of wasting it that the husband is going on an all-breast milk diet in order to use up his wife’s copious frozen supply. Monday night’s Republican primary debate got very heated, with Michele Bachman slamming Texas Governor Rick Perry for signing an executive order requiring all sixth-grade girls to receive the vaccine for HPV, the virus that can lead to cervical and other kinds of cancer, as well as genital warts. Bachman called the vaccine “a very dangerous drug,” and recounted the story of a mother who said her daughter suffered mental retardation after getting immunized for HPV. The AAP soon released a statement refuting the science of that claim.Read Full Post
