Chances are, you or someone you know has struggled with breast cancer. It’s a disease that affects mothers, grandmothers and daughters. That’s why Parenting has partnered with Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, a series of 5K runs/walks around the country to raise money for breast cancer research, treatment and education. Read Full Post

Birth is a funny thing; one minute there’s a stranger you’ve never met inside you, and the next your flesh and blood is in your arms, and you make the quantum leap from anticipatory attachment to full-on, I-would-die-for-you infatuation. Unless you don’t. Writer Jessica Valenti shares in a bravely honest essay in The Guardian her hesitation to fully love her newborn daughter Layla, born 11 weeks early and very sick. Read Full Post

Ten-year-old Culley Larson’s most prized possession is his BMX bike, which he takes out every weekend to race on dirt trails. That’s why the little boy from Albert Lee, Minnesota, was so devastated when someone stole it from his parents’ garage (robbing a child – who does that?). So Larson wrote a letter to his local paper asking parents to keep an eye out for his bike. Read Full Post

You buy a car seat to keep your child as safe as possible in the event of a crash, but could you be exposing your child to possibly dangerous chemicals ever time you strap them in? A new report from Healthystuff.org, a project of the Michigan-based non-profit Ecology Center, looked at more than 150 car seats to determine the presence of flame-retardant chemicals, including bromine, chlorine, lead and other substances that have been linked to learning disabilities or developmental issues. I missed my son’s first steps because I was at work. I saw him wobble through a few steps and took the requisite video when I got home (still a first for me if not for him). There have been dozens of milestones that I have been there for since, so today it doesn’t feel like that much of a loss. But at the time, I wrote a Facebook status about being devastated I’d missed it.
A recent post in The Juggle poses this intriguing question: do you want to know about what you’re missing at home, or is ignorance bliss?

Has your kid ever played on a see-saw? In recent decades, see-saws, tall jungle gyms, big slides, merry-go-rounds, and even tire swings have largely disappeared from playgrounds as federal guidelines and safety standards set by manufacturers (largely driven by fear of lawsuits) aim to make structures safer. But a recent New York Times piece wonders: are kids missing out on the chance to build confidence by having all the risk removed from their play spaces?Read Full Post

During my two pregnancies, I had many fears; would my baby be ok? Would I be a good mom? Just how much would the delivery hurt? But I fretted about something else too, something I knew was silly, but I nevertheless thought about daily: would I end up weighing more than my husband? Read Full Post

I’ve seen some pretty disturbing scenes on the New York subway, but this takes the cake. Two women, one a mom with a baby in a stroller, get physical arguing over a seat. Someone’s weave is ripped off. Meanwhile, the mom’s baby rolls out of the car at the station stop while the women continue to brawl. Is the baby stuck in the gap between the tracks and the car? Could the stroller roll onto the tracks on the other side? Will the train take off with her baby still at the station? Read Full Post

We’ve all had our kids act less-than-graciously about not getting something they want, but most of us don’t have that moment broadcast on national TV. That’s why this little boy’s hilarious snit about not ending up with a foul ball that went into the stands had us cracking up in knowing recognition (and thanking our lucky stars it wasn’t our kid!)
