It’s been more than 6 years, and I’m still not over it. I was probably around 25 weeks pregnant and clearly showing, but proud that I was eating sensibly and had only put on about 15 pounds. A friend who hadn’t seen me in a few months (and who’s obviously never been pregnant herself) laid eyes on me, and said: “Whoa, you are sooo big! You’ve gained, what, about 50 pounds?”Read Full Post

This story just gets weirder and weirder. Remember the mom who injected her 8-year-old beauty queen daughter with Botox and then blithely defended the practice on Good Morning America? Now she’s claiming she made it all upRead Full Post

Remember the mom who gave her 8-year-old beauty queen daughter Botox and bikini waxes? There were rumors going around the internet that maybe she wasn’t real. But then she showed up on Good Morning America, admitting unapologetically that she injects Botox into her daughter’s dimples to get a leg up in pageants, and even sharing photos of the procedure. Now ABC News is reporting that the mom, Kerry Campbell, has lost custody of her daughter, Britney, after San Francisco Human Services Agency launched an investigation.Read Full Post

Gwyneth Paltrow’s kids call grandmother Blythe Danner “Lalo,” and Goldie Hawn has her grandkids call her “Glam-Ma.” For some women, “Grandma” connotes an image of an out-of-touch granny with white hair and pearls—in other words, old. But according to the U.S. Census, grandparents are actually getting younger, officially earning the title with the birth of their first grandchild on average at the age of 47. So, according to the New York Times, many baby boomer grandparents are figuring out their own unique monikers.

I recently saw a friend who just had her second baby. She was overwhelmed and teary, as every mom is during those first few sleepless weeks. Add to her exhaustion a baby who's needier than her first and a spouse who travels about half the time for work. Her saving grace was that since she was going back to work after her maternity leave, she was still employing her nanny, who was there during the day to take care of her older child so she could focus on the baby. However, she’d been totally wounded when her MIL sniffed how she hadn’t needed all that help when she’d had her kids. She can afford the help, so why suffer needlessly? Yet having help, whether it’s hired childcare or a cleaning person, continues to be a hot button issue for many moms, enough so that many who do hire help choose to keep it hush-hush.Read Full Post

I’ve written before about stroller resentment, and about how I get it even though I am a pram-pusher myself. Now, after rider complaints, Boston is considering requiring parents to fold their strollers on city buses. It’s clear from the comments on the story that many people think parents should be forced to fold their stroller not just on buses but all forms of public transportation. Read Full Post

After an early arrival and some time in the NICU, I thought my newborn son was in the clear once I finally bought him home. But then my pediatrician shared the scary news that during his newborn screening in the hospital he had tested positive for cystic fibrosis, a life-threatening chronic lung and digestive disease. A positive result meant he could have CF, or just be a symptomless carrier, and we wouldn’t know for sure until he underwent a sweat test, the definitive diagnostic procedure for CF. For six already sleepless weeks we fretted until he weighed in at the required 8 lbs to have the test done, but thankfully it came back negative. Turns out these kinds of false positives and the ensuing panic are extremely common.Read Full Post

We had just about dried our tears from watching the Google Chrome commercial on It Gets Better, the video project to combat bullying of lesbian and gay teens, when we came upon another three-hanky ad. This one, entitled “Dear Sophie,” shows a dad sending e-mails to his daughter as she grows up, depicting first birthdays, lost teeth, and face-plants. Press play, and cue tears. Read Full Post

For those of us who are parents, this may elicit a giant DUH: many studies show that satisfaction with marriage takes a nosedive after the birth of your first child. In fact, about two-thirds of couples see the quality of their relationship deteriorate within three years of becoming parents, according to data from the Relationship Research Institute. That’s why, according to a piece in The Wall Street Journal, many hospitals and childbirth educators are starting to offer conflict resolutions in relationships along with breathing techniques for getting through labor. Read Full Post
