17-Year-Old Boy Sells Kidney to Buy an iPad 2

Apple

How sad to hear about a kid in China who was so desperate for an iPad 2 that he sold a kidney for it. Literally. Shanghai Daily reported last week that a 17-year-old boy named Zheng (only identified by his last name) had his kidney removed for 20,000 yuan (approximately $3,100) to have enough money to buy this highly coveted device.

Apparently, the poor kid was lured by an online advertisement for organ donation and moreover by its payout. With a flourishing underground black market for organs, Zheng was a prime target and was quickly shuffled to a hospital in a neighboring province to have the procedure.

The Daily quotes Zheng as saying, “I wanted to buy an iPad 2 but could not afford it. A broker contacted me on the Internet and said he could help me sell one kidney for 20,000 yuan.”

What’s even sadder is that after Zheng’s mom found out and contacted the police, he started having complications because further investigation determined that the hospital he went to is not even authorized to perform kidney transplants.

Zheng now says he “regrets” the procedure.

Here’s a link to Reuters video with more detail on this sad tale:
