Good news in the fight against obesity:
Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer, has joined forces with First Lady Michelle Obama to launch a healthy food initiative to help change the way American families eat. Through its new “Nutrition Charter,” the company is pledging to:
- Eliminate partially hydrogenated fats and oils and reduce sodium and sugar content for private-label packaged foods by 2015.
- Make fresh fruits and vegetables more affordable for families.
- Create easy-to-read seals on packages to help consumers identify nutritious food options.
Wal-mart, with more than 140 million customer visits each week, has tremendous reach, and any move that helps families bring healthy (and affordable!) food to the table is a step in the right direction.
