New Parents Name Daughter After Twitter Symbol

Thanks to some celebrities’ name choices we barely bat an eye when an out-there baby name is chosen, but this Saturday the Jameson family left us all scratching our heads when they shared their baby girl’s name: Hashtag.  Yes, as in the symbol using to show a trending topic on Twitter.

The unnamed new mom announced the birth of her daughter via Facebook, writing, "Hashtag Jameson was born at 10 o'clock last nite.  She weys 8pounds and i luv her so much!!!!!!”

One friend commented her congratulations,"Aww babes you finally had youre Tweetybird xxx," but Twitter users were not as amused, tweeting hashtags of their own: #Foolishparents, #YourParentsHateYou, #StupidestNameEver.  Commenters all over the Internet are wondering not only about the new parents’ judgment, but also over the legitimacy of Hashtag actually being the baby’s girl legal name, reports Yahoo! Shine.

Strangely enough, the Jamesons are not the first to make a social network term the inspiration for their child’s namesake.  In February 2011, a man in Egypt named his first daughter Facebook, and In 2011 Israelis Lior Adler and his wife, Vardit, named their little girl Like.
