Colorado Shooting Victim’s Wife Gives Birth

In the wake of the unthinkable tragedy in Aurora, Colo., some good news came in the form of a new baby named Hugo Medley. Katie Medley gave birth to her son, NBC News reports, at 7:11 a.m. Tuesday morning after narrowly escaping the attacks in the Colorado theater shooting. Though she escaped the attacks unharmed, her husband, Caleb Medley, lies in the same hospital in a medically induced coma, unaware that his son was born.

The two high school sweethearts were celebrating one final date night before the birth of their son, which was scheduled to take place on July 23. Unfortunately, the evening took a tragic turn as Caleb was shot in the face. He has lost his right eye and suffered brain damage from the attack.

The young couple does not have health insurance and friends have rallied to help them collect money for what is sure to be hefty hospital bills. They have organized a website to collect monetary donations and share Caleb, Katie, and now baby Hugo’s inspirational story.
