Super Dog Rescues Pregnant Mama-To-Be
April 4, 2013
Super pup to the rescue! A boisterous goldendoodle saved his pregnant owner and her unborn child this week by alerting the woman’s husband to the fact that she was having a seizure.
At 26 weeks pregnant, Janelle Giannetta wasn’t feeling well last Friday afternoon, so she headed upstairs to rest. Shortly afterward, her husband heard their dog Louie yapping up a storm. “I heard the dog barking like crazy, like I’ve never heard him bark before,” Richard Giannetta told a CBS reporter.
When he headed upstairs to investigate, he found the pooch next to Janelle on the bed, barking agitatedly. The unconscious mama-to-be was seizing and foaming at the mouth. Richard called 911 and emergency responders rushed Janelle to the hospital.
Doctors diagnosed her with eclampsia – a potentially fatal pregnancy complication in which a pregnant woman develops unusually high blood pressure and protein in her urine and suffers from seizures. The condition occurs in one of every 2,000 to 3,000 births, according to the National Institutes of Health. The only “cure” — delivery.
Daughter Charlotte Marie arrived by emergency cesarean section weighing 1 pound, 7 ounces. Doctors expect the preemie to be in the hospital until her original due date, in July. Janelle will be released this week.
As for Louie, the hero pooch, let’s just say he won’t end up in the doghouse anytime soon. “Louie is the champion,” Janelle told Newsday. Her husband agrees. “Steak … whatever he wants, he can have,” Richard told reporters. “We’re lucky to have an eager, rambunctious 1-year-old pup.”
