July 6, 2012

In really unwise parenting news, a mother who was dining at an Arizona pizza parlor poured beer into her toddler’s sippy cup because he had been reaching for it, according to Fox 10 News.
A witness claims that she watched the 36-year-old mother—Valerie Topete—pour beer from a pitcher for her 2-year-old son. The witness proceeded to call 911 after the child fell out of his high chair, presumably intoxicated.

Valerie explained to police that she had given the boy just a “splash of beer” in his apple juice in the hopes that he wouldn’t like the taste of it. She was trying to use “reverse psychology” after the toddler kept reaching for the pitcher.
Police who inspected the sippy cup noted that the liquid inside had foam and smelled of alcohol. Valerie, who has been arrested, admitted that she saw her son drink from the cup. The boy was subsequently taken to a hospital, but is doing well and is currently in his father's custody.
