Toyota, GM Issuing Car Recalls

Toyota Motor Corp is recalling 1.1 million cars around the world due to defects with airbags and wiper glitches. This is the third Toyota recall since October that involves more than a million cars.

Included in the recall are 752,00 Corolla and Corolla Matrix cars in the U.S,. due to a chip in the airbag control unit that may malfunction, deploying the airbags unnecessarily. The problem has caused minor abrasive injuries in 18 reported cases, but is easily fixable with an electrical signal filter in the airbag control module. Toyota estimates the repair time will take an hour-and-a-half, at most.

Toyota is also recalling certain Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles in Japan, Canada, and Mexico.

Additionally, Toyota is recalling 385,000 Lexus IS and its series, including 270,000 Lexus IS vehicles in the U.S. due to wiper problems.

The wiper arm nut of the front wiper in these cars may not be tight enough, causing the wiper to malfunction certain weather conditions, like snow. The repair time for replacing the faulty nuts will take 30 minutes, according to a Toyota rep.

Update: 

General Motors Co is recalling 13,680 cars globally due to problems with improperly tightened suspension bolts and faulty airbags.

GM is recalling 8,519 2013 model year Chevrolet Malibu sedans in the U.S. The rear suspension bolts may not have been tightened properly in these cars, increasing the risk of a crash due to loss of vehicle handling.

GM is also recalling another 1,060 of the cars in Canada, Mexico and overseas.

Included in the recall are 3,896 2012 model year Buick Verano, and Chevy Camaro, Cruze and Sonic cars in the U.S. due to potentially faulty airbags. An issue with a shorting bar that may cause airbags to be deployed unnecessarily. Another 205 cars were affected by the recall in Canada, GM said.

According to GM, neither issue has resulted in any accidents or injuries.
