Pool Drowning Deaths Jump in 2012

With record temperatures all over the country this month, the pool might seem like the best way to keep cool and have some fun outdoors. But even if your kids swim like fish, it’s absolutely imperative to stay vigilant. “Drowning is quick and silent; it can happen before any adult knows about it,” says Inez Tenenbaum, chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Drowning is the number one cause of death of children under 5 and deaths are on the rise, according to a report by TODAY, so it’s worth reviewing pool safety guidelines to keep your little mermaid or merman safe.

Since Memorial Day, 77 people have drowned in a pool (most of them kids), and 78 others were involved in near-drowning experiences. Each year, 390 kids under 14 die in accidental drownings, so pool safety should be on everyone’s mind when that temperature creeps up the thermometer.
