Couple Straps Kids to Hood of Moving Car

From the “What were they possibly thinking?” section of the news comes this story from Fort Wayne, Indiana, where four children, ages four to seven years old, were rescued after being strapped to the hood of a moving car. Driver Aaron Stefanski and passenger Jessica Clark, both 29, allegedly strapped the children to their vehicle at a Fort Wayne liquor store and drove off, reports CBS affiliate WANE.

The couple was stopped just a few blocks away by a U.S. marshal who saw the children. Onlookers were shocked. One resident, Bonita Gorsuch, told WANE, “I couldn't believe it! They had this strap across their legs. They were squirming to get out. They didn't know what to do.  And I told the people in the car, 'Don't do that!'”

It is impossible to imagine how anyone could have such poor judgment (Stefanski allegedly explained that he thought it would be “fun” for the kids)—though the driver’s .17 blood alcohol just might have had something to do with it. The children did not appear to be hurt, three of which belong to Stefanski and the fourth to Clark. It is still unclear who holds custody and the exact nature of the Stefanski and Clark’s relationship.

Both adults were arrested and are currently in police custody. Stefanski was charged with three counts of operating while intoxicated and one count of neglect of a dependent. Clark was charged with one count of neglect of a dependent.
