Are Fairy Tales Too Scary for Kids?

I grew up hearing the classic fairytales of Little Red Riding Hood and Rumplestiltskin during story time. But today's parents are more hesitant to share these stories with their kids, and many won't read them to their kids at all: The BBC reported that 50 percent of parents polled for a survey said these stories are too scary for kids.

The parents in the survey said they feel the stories aren't appropriate for kids because they feature (admittedly frightening) scenes including kidnapping and theft. Other parents said they avoid the fairytales because they are sexist—like the story of Cinderella spending her days doing housework.
