Today in sad news: An eight-year-old girl was shot in the abdomen in Armin Jahr elementary school, about 20 miles away from Seattle. How did this happen? CBS reports that she was shot when a gun in a fellow classmate's backpack accidentally went off. As of Wednesday night the girl was in critical condition after surgery, although her friends and family gave reporters a thumbs-up sign after leaving the hospital—hopefully an indication that she'll recover.

Although this incident is being treated as an accident, the third grader who had the backpack with the gun in it was booked into a juvenile detention center on charges including third-degree assault and unlawful possession of a gun.
Bill Poss, the husband of the teacher who was in class when the shooting occurred, said in an interview that his wife had mentioned the behavior of the child who brought in the gun to him before: "He's been a real problem in the class, and she's been very concerned about it."
