Joseph Loughrey of Pennsylvania accidentally shot and killed his 7-year-old son outside of a gun store. The child was buckling in to his safety seat when the gun, a loaded 9mm, went off. Newser reports that the father was laying the gun down on the dashboard when it accidentally fired. The father said he had emptied the magazine earlier but forgot to remove the bullet from the chamber. He has the gun in the car because he was trying, unsuccessfully, to sell it.
While the father will have to deal with the loss of his son, police don't think he will be charged with involuntary manslaughter. One officer involved in the case said that it's "very clear-cut exactly what transpired here," but also said that it was "obviously negligent and reckless to some degree."
Do you think the dad should be charged? How do you keep guns safely away from your kids? Tell us in the comments.
