13 and Pregnant: When Should You Talk to Your Kids About Sex?
December 28, 2010
Nathan Fishbourne and April Webster, both 14, are parents to a newborn son they conceived at age 13, making them Britain's youngest parents. The couple met while studying and decided against using contraceptives because Nathan "didn't like it." Their South Wales community of Caerphilly has promised to "support them in every way," and while I don't know all that entails, I'm sure these kids will need all the support they can get.
This story became more powerful to me when I started thinking about what I was doing at 13—hosting silly dance parties in my room, going to swim practice, and thinking boys were really, really dumb. I wonder if Nathan's and April's parents talked to them about sex, or if they learned about it in school.
Have any of you talked to your kids about the birds and the bees? How early is too early?
