Colorado Shooting Victim Suffers a Miscarriage

The death toll in the Aurora, Colorado theater shooting rose to 13 when 25-year-old Ashley Moser, who on July 20 was shot in the neck and stomach, suffered a miscarriage. On the night of the shooting, Ashley Moser also lost her 6 year-old daughter, Veronica Moser-Sullivan. Moser underwent surgery at Aurora Medical Center on Saturday, reports NBC News.

Ashley Moser’s family released a statement:

“Ashley Moser is recovering from an additional surgery she had this morning. Tragically, the extreme trauma she sustained also caused a miscarriage.

We want to send a special thank you to the courageous heroes of law enforcement, other first responders, paramedics, and doctors and nurses who have all gone beyond the call-of-duty in caring for our daughter, granddaughter and all of the other victims of this tragic event.

Our sincere appreciation goes out to all of those who have been sending well-wishes, prayers and good thoughts to Ashley. Her lifetime of care will be a long road. The suspected gunman in the theater shooting, 24-year-old James Holmes, will not be charged with causing Ashley Moser’s miscarriage. Karen Steinhauser, who is a defense attorney and former prosecutor, told the Associated Press that in Colorado that charges can only be made when the victim “had been born and alive.” Holmes is set to be charged in Colorado on Monday for murdering 12 and injuring 58, when he opened fire on a movie theater audience.
