Recall: Caribbean Gold Variety Cantaloupes

More than 188,000 cantaloupes of the Caribbean Gold variety, distributed by Burch Equipment LLC, have been recalled for concerns over Listeria, according to the FDA. The cantaloupes, which were contaminated due to unsanitary packing conditions in the plant, were shipped between July 15th and July 27th and distributed in The cantaloupes were distributed in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Maine, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia.
Burch Equipment LLC has released a correction to the original recall that led people to believe that the Athena variety of cantaloupes had been recalled; however, the Athena variety is not a part of this recall.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that Listeria infection can be fatal, and cause miscarriage or stillbirth in pregnant women. The symptoms of the disease include fever, muscle aches, stiffness, headaches, and diarrhea.
The Caribbean Gold cantaloupes were grown by Burch Farms and can be identified by red labels that reference PLU #4319, though a portion of the labels may reference Cottle Strawberry Inc, PLU #4319. No illnesses related to this recall have been reported have been reported yet.
