Bubble Gum Recalled Due to Lead

For the third time this year, Candy Dynamics (also known as Circle City Marketing and Distributing) has issued a recall of some of its candy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that a single lot of the unfortunately named Toxic Waste Short Circuits Bubble Gum has been voluntarily recalled due to elevated levels of lead.
The recall involves Lot #15070SC12 (found along the left side of the bag), of the 3.2 oz. size of the super-sour gum (UPC 0 89894 31001 3), which Candy Dynamics imports from Pakistan. FDA testing found that it had exceeded acceptable lead levels (0.189 parts per million; the FDA tolerance is 0.1 ppm), which potentially could cause health problems, particularly for pregnant women, infants, and small children. (Reminder: for kids under 4, gum is a choking hazard.) The recalled gum was sold nationwide in retail stores and through mail orders, as well as distributed in limited quantities in Canada and Switzerland, from January 4, 2011 through March 18, 2011.
No other “Toxic Waste” brand products or other lots of “Short Circuits” bubble gum are included in this recall, and no illnesses have been reported thus far in connection to the gum. Consumers should call the company for information on destruction of the gum at 317-228-5012 (Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm EST).

In January, the company recalled its Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge candy, also because of high lead levels, and then later expanded that recall and announced it was no longer selling Nuclear Sludge products in the U.S.
