When shopping for my own kids and searching for gifts for expectant mama friends, I try to stay away from big-name brands when I can; I want my sons to look hip and not identical to every other kid on the playground, and I also want to give new moms something that really stands out and feels special for their babes. Enter MUNY, one of my fave new brands, designed by a local Brooklyn mom/architect, Samara Mahendru, and produced by traditional artisans in India.
The clothes and accessories in the MUNY (Mumbai + New York = MUNY) line are created using the centuries-old technique of hand-block printing (applying eco-friendly dyes to an intricately carved teak wood block and pressing it onto the fabric). I love the combination of the modern, whimsical designs, kinda bohemian vibe and traditional production techniques (check out the incredible production process here).
I’ve got my eye on one of the double-sided quilts (my fave is the skateboarding owls, shown here, also available in blue, $119) for a friend’s baby shower later this summer, but I also love the Dohar (summer) blankets (made from three layers of cotton—only the middle layer is printed while the super soft outer ones are translucent, $60), vintage throws (made from recycled saris; $149) and little girls’ dresses ($48). Oh, and be sure to check out the limited new line of women’s clothes, as well as the sweet bags and scarves, because why should the kids be the only ones to stand out from the crowd?
