NRA Commercial Brings Obama Kids into the Gun Debate
January 16, 2013

The National Rifle Association released a video on their website bringing President Obama’s family into the national gun debate. The ad premiered Tuesday and calls the Obama “an elitist hypocrite” for sending his children to class with Secret Service protection, while dismissing the organization’s strategy to place armed guards in every school in America.
“Are the president's kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school?” asks the clip's narrator. “Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, but he's just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security. Protection for their kids, and gun-free zones for ours.”
PLUS: Should Parents Ban Toy Guns?
According to USA Today the White House officially spoke out about the video this morning, calling the NRA’s reference to Sasha and Malia as “repugnant and cowardly.” Obama spokesperson Jay Carney further commented, "Most Americans agree that a president's children should not be used as pawns in a political fight."
Furthermore, the president has little say in whether or not Sasha and Malia go to school with protection. The Secret Service requires it.
PLUS: The NRA Releases Controversial Shooting Game for Kids
This morning President Obama unveiled his plan to reduce gun violence, including banning military-style assault weapons, limiting the number of bullets ammunition clips can hold, strengthen existing legislation on background checks, and increasing access to mental health services. It is the toughest gun reform proposal in decades.
Do you think it was right for the NRA to reference Obama’s family in their ad? What do you think of Obama's plan? Leave a comment.
