Why I Love Banned Books Week

It’s Banned Books Week! Hooray! That thrilling time of year when we bookworms get to feel like total bad-asses for doing something that’s often perceived as dweeby. Thank you, anti-First-Amendment folk, for making my daily nerdy habit feel truly transgressive—and for reminding me of how much I love our Bill of Rights.
 
Now, don’t get me wrong; as a parent, there are countless titles that I find inappropriate for my son (such as violent superhero comics, for example). So, yes, I engage in plenty of my own selective book banning—IN MY OWN HOME. Not at the school. Not at the library. Not in anyone else’s house. I’m keeping my hands off other people’s books; you keep your hands off of mine and my family’s.
