Baby Grows Outside Womb and Survives

For most women an ectopic pregnancy—where the egg attaches outside the uterus—means the baby will not survive. But when Phoenix mom Nicky Soto found out at 18 weeks along that her son was growing outside the womb, she made the risky decision to continue the pregnancy. She spent the duration of her pregnancy in the hospital, and her son Azelan was delivered 8 weeks early at 2 lbs, 14 ounces. Although he is very small, his mom says he does not have any major health problems.

Doctors say this is the first time they know of that a healthy baby has come from an ectopic pregnancy. The stroke of luck in this otherwise dismal scenario? The placenta was not attached to any vital organs or cutting off bloody supply.
