When it first came out, a disturbing number of friends sent this article about Twi-moms to me. What were they trying to say? They weren’t suggesting a mature, middle-aged woman like myself could be totally, rabidly into a young adult book series, and their seriously cheesy movie counterparts, right?
Hello, my name is Sasha, and I’m a Twi-mom. Team Edward!
Why do these books and movies appeal to moms like me? Although I think the books jumped the shark sometime around the beginning of Breaking Dawn, the series takes me back to a different time, one that’s kind of fun to visit. It makes me remember when I had hours and hours to obsess about a crush, when a “hi” in the hall could make your week, and when love and lust felt terrifying and exhilarating all at the same time. I read the first book during a time when I was a moody mess from fertility drugs, and trying to face the fact that I might not be able to have a second child (in the end, I did). But Twilight sure gave me a swoony little world to escape to when my grown-up problems seemed like too much. I still crack it open when I’m sick or after a really rough day. I saw the first two movies with a gaggle of girlfriends, and I’m going to see Eclipse as soon as I can.
Are you a Twi-mom? Why do you love it? Will you go see Eclipse this holiday weekend?
