World Breastfeeding Week: Celeb Moms Who Nursed

Channel flipping one night, I came across Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami on E! I got, uh, sucked into a storyline about new mom Kourtney and nursing. The former party girl had a mom’s night out, and drank too much. She pumped and dumped that night (throwing breastmilk at her sis on camera, but I digress). But by the next morning, her milk still contained too much alcohol -- she was using Milkscreen pads to check -- and she began stressing that she’d run through her stash of pumped milk and would need to feed her son formula. She’d worked hard at exclusive nursing, and seemed heartbroken that she might have to end her streak due to a few too many cocktails. In the end, the booze left her body in time for her to feed, and she realized that her old wild life was firmly behind her.

Wait – was I still watching a reality show about socialites? I love when people surprise me – and it was a lovely surprise to see a story line like this on E! of all places. What mom can’t relate to the struggle to do your best for your baby? And who hasn’t had those moments of realizing your pre-baby life is behind you?

Let’s face it: when celebrities talk, a lot of people listen. And when they speak openly about breastfeeding – both the joys and the challenges – they do much to help promote it.
