Taylor Hengen Newman has been blogging on Parenting.com since she was pregnant with her son Kaspar, who’s now almost two. Sharing her life-- with all of its challenges and changes-- in this way has yielded the unexpected perk of making Taylor feel more accountable for living it authentically and well.

Six months into her mamahood adventure, Taylor left a full-time media job in New York City and moved across the country with her family, landing in Texas. Now settled in Austin, she works harder and happier than ever before as a freelance writer and (soon-to-be!) massage therapist, and spends most every afternoon exploring her surroundings with her son. Taylor marvels regularly at her realization that – with a little bit of creativity and a big dose of courage – it really is possible to ‘have it all.’ (Or at least all of what really matters). She hopes to inspire others to become happy and healthy in the ways that suit them best, and believes that parents in particular possess the greatest power to create positive change in our world.

Taylor loves cooking, yoga, travel and trying new things. She nurtures a deep passion for natural parenting and green urban living. While she is by no means a purist, Taylor strives to make conscious, informed decisions, and to continually cultivate mindfulness in the midst of daily life. At heart, she’s a little bit crunchy, and a little bit rock n’ roll.

Taylor is excited to lead the way with Parenting.com’s new 100% Natural Parenting blog, and also maintains her personal blog at Alt-Mama.com.

Chances are you’ve seen this cover by now, even though it just hit newsstands today (it took the internet by storm): a smokin’ hot mama looking calm, cool and collected -- no frizzy hair or sweatpants on this lady -- while she and her almost-four-year-old demonstrate what’s known as ‘extended breastfeeding’. And public breastfeeding, to the tune of international distribution. Double whammy! Let's discuss. Read Full Post

Following two controversies this week, some say removing nursing moms from the public eye is not the solution for onlookers’ discomfort. Others say covering up, bringing breastmilk in a bottle or taking other measures not to bare a boob in public are options moms should utilize, as a matter of manners. Is this necessary? Is it nice? Is it annoying? Tell us your thoughts! Read Full Post

A new "Baby Friendly Hospitals" initiative has been met with some public resistance, most notably this past week from Whoopi Goldberg, who called lactation consultants "boneheads" in front of millions of daytime TV viewers. (Classy, right?). Click to watch the video and tell us what you think! Read Full Post

Clearly, this person has a serious anger problem (her opening sentence is, “Before I had children I thought I knew the kind of folks I despised”…), but as the mother of a child who has food allergies which are in fact real, and life-threatening, her rant caught my attention. It also scared me a little. Read Full Post

Stay-at-home-moms, in Elisabeth Badinter's opinion, are feminism’s worst offenders, but she believes all mothers who snub the ‘gains’ of the past century — epidurals, formula, and disposable diapers, to name a few — are making a grave mistake that will haunt them once their kids are out of the house (or simply reach preschool age). There's proof that playing outdoors and getting dirty is actually good for kids. Like, really good! Once again, nature’s showing us all up by getting it right the first time around; because isn’t getting dirty what kids do best? Read Full Post

If you delivered your baby in a hospital, chances are you went home with infant formula samples in your bag. I know I did. Maybe you even got a little goodie bag from a formula manufacturer, filled not only with free formula, but also with informational pamphlets on new-baby care? I got those, too. Now that the AAP has updated its breastfeeding guidelines, dozens of consumer and health organizations have appealed to hospitals to stop doling out the free formula -- and pamphlets, coupons, etc. -- to moms who’ve just given birth.
