I’ve noticed a disconcerting pattern, lately, concerning Saturdays. I’ve never been a morning person on any day of the week-- my I-can-do-anything attitude consistently hits its stride in the early afternoon-- but waking up on Saturdays used to be a distinct pleasure, and now Saturdays clock in as the worst wake-up of the week. I used to savor that dawning realization that I could laze in bed a bit longer, that the weekend was just beginning, and that coffee, the farmer’s market, non-work-related projects, and social engagements awaited… and would wait, without urgency, until I was good and ready to start my day (remember morning sex?). These days, well, Saturday mornings don’t go down like that at all.Read Full Post

With all of this public outdoor space nearby, and having focused much of our home-front attention on setting up our indoor environment over these last several months (come on in for a tour of Kaspar’s room), we’ve only recently turned our gaze to our own little backyard. It’s small—about eleven by twenty feet—but it has potential; it extends off of our window-walled home office, and is surrounded by a tall fence, so it feels like an additional room with plenty of privacy and an extra awesome ceiling (sunsets, anyone?). At the moment, it’s basically a Rectangle-O-Dirt, with some patchy grass poking through. But Kaspar’s insisted on playing out there a lot lately, and I’ve been having visions… of a garden, a breakfast table, a clothesline. Maybe even compost. Definitely some fun stuff for the little man. Like bunnies! Okay, bunnies are a step too far. No bunnies. But the rest I think I can do. And the babyman part— well, that’s where you come in.

Kaspar went into anaphylaxis last Sunday afternoon, a week ago. His lips swelled like balloons after eating some lentils and goat cheese, and I stabbed myself clear through the thumb (in the pad, out the nail) with the first Epi pen before getting it right with the second. Aaron called 9-1-1. Read Full Post

We lived in a 400 square foot railroad apartment back in Brooklyn, and while I nested like a pregnant pro, we were definitely feeling the tight-quarters squeeze by the time we decided to move. I had big plans to make Kaspar’s room (his very own room) into a fun, inviting and imaginitive place upon landing, and although he still sleeps with us, he starts out in his own crib, and plays/reads/chills out in his room a lot by day. I love that he has a little space to call his own, and although we’re not yet ready to buy a house to call our own, I feel strongly that environment is everything, and went all out in creating exactly the room for Kaspar that I imagined. Come on in for a tour!

Kaspar turned one this past Friday! We had a big party, and a fantastic time. Turning one is a big deal. Maybe each of our kids’ birthdays is a big deal, though, reminding us of the day when-- after much anticipation-- they arrived safely in our arms, changing our lives forever. I was choked up for days leading up to Kaspar’s birthday. On Thursday night, after I’d put him to bed and settled down to supposedly get some work done, I just plain couldn’t take it anymore… I spent the time I’d reserved for work curating a selection of photos from the past year for a shamelessly self-indulgent Facebook album (what else is Facebook for, after all?). I’ve aired some of the year’s highlights, of course, right here on this blog along the way: remember this? Woah, right?! Then this, the very next day!Read Full Post

Kaspar’s taken to dancing lately. It’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen. I danced a lot while I was pregnant— our circle of friends has a thing for throwing dance parties… or other kinds of parties/holiday dinners/movie nights that inevitably evolve into dance parties—so I’m glad to see some rhythm made it through the DNA transfer. This penchant for dancing has coincided with a new and ardent distaste for diaper changes, too, so there’s basically been tons of naked baby butt-wagging happening in our house over the past several weeks. It’s amazing. It’s exactly the stuff those ‘I’m-so-psyched-to-be-your-mom’ moments are made of.
With that in mind, I noticed the shelves of children’s music CDs at the library the other day (read: Kaspar single-handedly un-shelved about two hundred children’s CDs at the library the other day), and thought while thumbing through them (read: attempting to re-shelve them, alphabetically) that perhaps I should expose him to some of whatever’s out there that’s been made specifically for kids.

I wrote a couple of weeks ago about our pediatrician’s suggestion that we do some allergy testing for Kaspar, who’s been itching due to eczema basically since birth, and the shock and panic I felt upon hearing the results: that he’s highly allergic to wheat, soy, corn, walnuts, peanuts, egg whites and cat dander. I was afraid, with that list in hand, that Kaspar’s daily life would be drastically limited by life-threatening allergies, but your comments—and my subsequent research (the learning curve on this stuff is sharp, huh?)—helped me land in a solid, “We can do this” groove. I figured I’d just feed Kaspar whatever he can eat—no big deal—and I requested some further testing so that we could identify which foods would be safe. That’s when things started getting weird. And worse. Way, way worse.Read Full Post

As we get to the bottom of Kaspar’s allergy stuff (slash wait for him to outgrow the bulk of it), knowing that our home environment is clean and safe for him is reason enough to bring in the pros. But seriously, I feel like I’ve discovered the land of milk and honey, mama-style, irrespective of weird baby allergy problems. We’ll still do our maintenance cleaning, but to get the serious-business, deep-clean taken care of for us once a month while we go have fun together as a family, instead of spending a weekend exhausting ourselves with this chore (and yielding only mediocre results), is my idea of awesome.

Two close family friends of ours have had babies during the past month (hooray!), three more are expecting arrivals in the next several weeks, and we just learned some new friends whose son is Kaspar’s age exactly will welcome their next installment in June. Maybe there’s something in the water? Whatever it is, I’m super excited to warmly welcome all of these little people, and especially to do some new-baby gifting! Why? Because new-baby gifting gives me an excuse to browse and buy children’s books, which is one of my very favorite things to do.Read Full Post

“Well…,” our doc continued. “There are four levels here, in terms of how allergic people are to various foods or substances. Low, moderate, high and very high. Very high is a seventeen. Kaspar got a sixty-seven on cat dander.”
“We have two cats.”
“There you go.” She said.
“Okay,” I said. “We’ll have to find them a new home. That’s... really good to know. Wow.”
“There’s more,” she said.
You ready for this, readers? Kaspar also cleared that very high marker four times over on wheat, soy, corn, peanuts, walnuts, and egg whites.
“Um, holy sh*t.”
