I don’t mean to be depressing here, people; and I’m not saying everyone should give birth at home. I’m saying women deserve to not only feel, but also be, safe, whether they’re in hospitals or at home. It’s important that we recognize what about our approach to health care, and our health care system, isn’t working, despite its being such a money pit. And it’s important that we have good information, and good choices, at every crucial health-related juncture. Childbirth is a biggie, right? So what CAN we do?Read Full Post

When a mom in Florida was told by her daughter’s daycare that they couldn’t use cloth diapers – as the family did at home – because it was illegal in their state, she sent her kiddo to daycare with disposables for a year… Until her friend did some digging and discovered that cloth diapering is not only perfectly legal in daycares in Florida, but the state’s laws include a clause specifically addressing the proper handling of cloth diapers in a daycare setting.Read Full Post

MacDonald was born a woman, transitioned to a male identity via hormones and “top” (chest) surgery, gave birth to his own son, attended La Leche League meetings while pregnant and ultimately—with the help of a supplementary nursing system (SNS) and some donated breast milk – nursed his baby through year one and beyond. It’s unlikely that everyone will ever be willing—and some people just aren’t medically able – to buck the system entirely and give birth at home; for those in this camp who also want a drug-free birth, or who want more control over their birth experience, water birth (and natural pain relief options) within a hospital marks a welcome shift from either/or choices to hybridized, have-your-cake-and-eat-it (natural) hospital birthing.Read Full Post

Although it’s been in the works – and riled alarmists (Whoopi Goldberg had some choice words to share back in May) – for a while, New York City’s “Latch On NYC” initiative, which will be put into practice in 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals beginning on September 2, has caught a recent wave of inflammatory flack among various ‘news’ sources, mom bloggers, and more.Read Full Post
