An ear infection, also known as acute otitis media (AOM), is the inflammation and infection of the middle ear, and is the most common illness diagnosed in childhood after the common cold. It occurs most often after a cold or flu when fluid from the child’s nose and throat builds up, creating a breeding ground for bacteria.
