  • 10. Milwaukee, Wis.

Our list of the Most Dangerous Cities in America starts in Wisconsin's largest city, Milwaukee. According to the peace index from the Institute for Economics & Peace, the state as a whole is one of the safest on our list: Wisconsin ranks 19th out of the 50 states. However, Milwaukee has high numbers in violent and property crimes and sex offenders per capita.

  • 9. New Haven, Conn.

New Haven resides in the safest state to appear on both our Safest and Most Dangerous cities lists, according to the Institute for Economics & Peace's index. Connecticut ranks 14th out of the 50 states. But the peace and safety numbers don't translate over to New Haven, which has the fourth-highest rate of sex offenders per capita on our list. New Haven is also on our Top 10 Worst Cities for Education list.

  • 8. Baltimore, Md.

Baltimore has high numbers in violent and property crimes and sex offenders per capita. However, with the help of Maryland's mid-level ranking on the Institute for Economics & Peace's index (38th out of the U.S. states), its scores weren't high enough to push it to the top of our list.

  • 7. Flint, Mich.

Flint, the first of two Michigan cities on our list, has the second-highest violent crime rate. But it also has the third-lowest number of sex offenders per capita. Flint is the smallest city on our list, with just over 100,000 residents.

  • 6. Detroit, Mich.

We're still in Michigan for our No. 6 pick. The Motor City has the third-highest violent crime rate and the fifth-highest rate for property crimes. Michigan's largest city isn't ranked higher on our list because it has the lowest number of sex offenders per capita.
