  • "In the picture is my husband Scott and our son Ryan in the Outer Banks, North Carolina -- he is 5 weeks old in the picture, now 11 weeks. I currently have both arms and feet tattooed. I definitely plan on getting a tattoo for Ryan, but will probably wait a few years to see his personality develop to be inspired. I am proud to be a tattooed mama. When I was pregnant, people would tell me 'Oh, giving birth won't be so bad because you have so many tattoos, your used to pain.' Getting tattooed is no comparison! I'd rather get tattooed for a week straight then feel the pain of pushing and delivering any day!"

  • "This tattoo represents my mom who passed away when I was just 10 years old. She comes to me in my dreams as an Owl or Pueo, in Hawaiian. She is my guardian, and I carry her with me at all times."

  • "I have four tattoos currently, but once I'm done being pregnant I'll have more! This tattoo I have on my arm is my favorite. It's tigger for my nephew. He told me once when he was about 2 years old that Tigger is his hero, and he's mine. If it weren't for that little boy, I don't know where I'd be. So we got Tigger done. The J. R. M. underneath are his initals!"

  • "This is my second tattoo. I got it a week after my husband and I got married. The kanji means energy. My husband and I believe that everything stems from energy, and everything in life depends on your state of energy. My husband got the same kanji on the same ankle at the same time. I have always loved Asian culture and cherry blossoms have always been beautiful to me. I definitely plan on getting more tattoos and plan to raise my children to be accepting of everyone no matter what their lifestyle choice is."

  • "This tattoo is all of my siblings initials (including my own) in order -- reverse birth order, boys to girls -- plus a little heart representing both our bond and one baby my mother miscarried at a late stage. I designed the tattoo myself. I was inked in Paris in 2007, a few months before I became pregnant with my son. Why in Paris? I took one of my sisters to the City of Lights for her 30th birthday, and we both decided to make it even more memorable -- she has a cat on her ankle now, in honor of the last name shared with her husband, son, and daughter.

  • "This is a picture of my latest tattoo, right after I got it. It is for my son, Alexander, and my husband, Frank. For my generation, tattoos are a normal way to express ourselves, but there are still some people that are shocked by my ink!"

  • "This is my first and only tattoo. I got it about 2 months ago and I am so glad I did. It's for my daughter, who is now 14 months. The halo is because she's my angel and the heart is for the love that we share. Below it in the banner is her name, Dalia.

  • "This tattoo holds a very special meaning. My youngest son, Noah, has had three surgeries to remove the left half of his brain due to a seizure disorder. He is finally seizure-free, and I got my first and only tattoo to celebrate this momentous occasion. The butterfly is the logo for the Hemispherectomy Foundation, a wonderful organization that provides support for families whose children have undergone a hemispherectomy, the same surgery Noah had. There is an 'N' in the left wing to represent the left half of Noah's brain being removed. The two large stars hold the initials of my older sons. I chose green and blue because those are my older boys' favorite colors. 'Believe' is our motto for all that Noah has been through. It also happens to be the city motto for Baltimore, where Noah's surgery took place and where he became seizure-free."

  • "On my right leg is a fairy tattoo. It doesn't stand for anything -- it's just a figurine I got as a gift from someone. I loved it so much I got it as a tattoo."

  • "In June, I turned the BIG 40. I wanted to do something special to symbolize my 40 years. So, you guessed it -- I got a tattoo.

I have always wanted a tattoo, but was always too nervous about the pain. I decided it was now or never! But, I wanted to be sure that it was meaningful. I have always had a love for dolphins. They are such amazing creatures. My dream was to go swimming with dolphins for my 40th, but that didn't happen. So, I decided to incorporate them in my tattoo. I decided on a circle of swimming dolphins. Each dolphin represents one of my children and is the color of their birthstone. My kids love it, and now whenever I go swimming, I am actually swimming with the dolphins."

  • "I got this tattoo because I was having fertility problems. My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for over a year. I was also taking fertility drugs to help. This verse has always spoken to me, but I kept forgetting to pray about this problem we were having. I decided I needed the reminder with me all the time. 3 weeks after I got the tattoo I found out I was pregnant with our first baby. We are so excited!

    The verse is Philippians 4:6-7:

Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus."

  • "I designed all my tattoos myself; they are in my handwriting. This is my first, which I got on November 4, 2006 when my daughter was 6 months old. It took me 6 months to design. 'Principessa' is Italian for princess (I came up with this idea because her father is part Italian and she is my little princess). Ariel Nicole is her name, and I had it placed on the back of my neck because no matter what, she is always in the back of my mind.

Thanks for setting up this scrapbook and allowing all us tattooed mamas to share our tattoos & the stories behind them. Mine mean a lot to me -- my daughters are my world, and the tattoos I have are a symbol of both the pain and the pleasures of being a mom."
